The bar inside the Back Door Cafe is a site to behold.  It is ornate, solid wood, 18 feet long, absolutely beautiful and over 100 years old.  It is said that Robert E. Lee had drinks at it in the year of 1853.  It has a free standing mirrored top behind it that is even more ornate than the bar itself.  The brass nameplate on the bar is inscribed with "Rothschild & Sons" - Cincinnati and Chicago.

The bar was moved to Ft. McKavett and stayed there until the 1930's. No one knows how it was moved from Cincinnati or Chicago to Texas.  One way could have been to transport it down the Mississippi River to the Texas coast and then by ship onto the Port of Galveston.  The front of the bar is not built in sections, but one solid piece, so it seems highly unlikely it was transported by wagon the entire way.

The bar remained at Ft. McKavett until 1930 when K. Cowsert's father bought it and stored it in a barn at Bois d’Arc.  Staying in the barn all those years did not hurt this magnificent piece of furniture, as it is still in excellent shape.

The bar found a new home in 2006 and is on loan to the Simon's from the Cowsert family. It is for display only, however the cafe does serve beer and you can BYOB. Come visit and step back in time with us.  You'll be glad you did!
